Frequently Asked Questions

I currently have a full-time teaching load, how will the toolkit help me maintain industry currency?

The toolkits include tools and checklists with recommended tasks. The tools and checklists will enhance and build on any existing documents or processes you and your RTO have in place. They will guide your thinking and may provide alternative options or ways of doing things.

Without the support of your RTO and industry employers, it can be difficult to access opportunities to maintain industry currency. The RTO and employer toolkits support RTOs and employers to partner together to help you and other TTAs to stay up-to-date with industry skills and knowledge.

I currently hold part-time roles in industry and an RTO, how will the toolkit help me?

The toolkits include tools and checklists with recommended tasks. The tools and checklists will enhance and build on any existing documents or processes you and your RTO have in place. They will guide your thinking and may provide alternative options or ways of doing things. The tools and checklists could help you reduce the administration effort and time you spend recording and demonstrating industry currency.

Do I need to teach a particular training course to benefit from the toolkit?

No. The toolkit, tools and checklists are designed for flexibility and adaptability. You can tailor and edit them to align with your specific role, responsibilities and courses.

The tools include examples across different sectors. These examples help TTAs make the most of the tools, regardless of the courses they teach.

I want to feel confident I’ve met compliance requirements, can the toolkit help?

Yes. There are four ways the toolkit supports you to confidently meet compliance requirements:
  • Strong partnerships between your RTO and industry employers make it easier to access industry currency opportunities and gain insight into recent industry changes from an employer perspective.
  • The tools for TTAs, RTOs and employers enable a collaborative approach to planning industry currency opportunities over a 12-month period.
  • The RTO toolkit supports your RTO to provide you and your colleagues with consistent guidance on reflection, application and evidence expectations.
  • The TTA and RTO toolkits include recommended industry currency opportunities, including when they are most effective, to help you choose opportunities that align with the industry skills and knowledge you want to update.

How often should I use the tools and checklists? Do I need to use all of them?

Use the tools and checklists as often as you need.

The toolkit is not a process you must follow from start to finish. It’s designed to enhance and build on existing processes. You can choose which tools you will use and tailor these to best meet your needs.

How will the toolkit help my RTO work with employers to minimise health and safety risks?

Work health and safety risks for TTAs, employer staff and clients are an important consideration. RTOs will receive tools to help employers mitigate potential risks. Employers will receive a tool to help plan for and manage risks. This enables employers to identify industry currency opportunities that carry less risk and can be offered to TTAs.

Why does the toolkit suggest I should have reflective conversations with employers?

Learning everything you want to know about an industry skill or knowledge can take time. One way to maximise the time you spend with employers is to engage in reflective conversations, where staff can share further insights or considerations with you. The conversations do not need to be formal or take up a lot of time. You can learn a lot from casual discussions with staff.

My RTO doesn't know about this toolkit, how do I get them on board?

You can share this website and the toolkit links with your RTO so that you can use the toolkits together.

How will industry employers partner with our RTO to enable industry currency?

The employer toolkit includes tools and checklists to help employers complete key tasks to support industry currency.
These include:
  • Build strong partnerships with RTOs
  • Share high-level insight into key industry changes from an employer perspective
  • Identify and coordinate feasible opportunities for TTAs to update industry skills and knowledge
  • Enable their staff and clients to support industry currency opportunities
  • Confirm participation in industry currency opportunities
  • Engage in reflective discussion with TTAs, where relevant
    ‍
RTOs will share responsibility for some of these tasks, such as, identifying and coordinating industry currency opportunities.

The prepare stage includes tools for both RTOs and employers to build a shared understanding of partnership goals, roles and responsibilities, ways of working, and mutual benefit. This stage sets the foundation for the partnership and clarifies how each partner will support industry currency.

Why is collaboration important to help TTAs maintain industry currency?

TTAs may find it difficult to build relationships with senior stakeholders and decision-makers within employers to access industry currency opportunities.

Organisation-level partnerships between RTOs and industry employers ensure the right stakeholders are involved and can support collaboration. These partnerships also help RTOs and employers work together to resolve organisational challenges.

For example, an RTO and an employer may implement a brief 30-minute induction for TTAs to mitigate work health and safety risks.

How will the toolkit help our RTO meet compliance requirements?

There are four ways the toolkit helps your RTO meet compliance requirements:
  • Strong partnerships with industry employers make it easier to access industry currency opportunities and gain insight into recent industry changes from an employer perspective.
  • The industry currency schedule supports RTOs and employers to plan and coordinate industry currency opportunities for multiple TTAs over a 12‑month period.
  • The measurement approach helps RTOs tailor and standardise how TTAs record, reflect on and apply industry currency throughout the year, based on organisational requirements.
  • The RTO and TTA toolkits include guidance on when different industry currency opportunities are most effective to support decision-making.

We already have a partnership with an employer, do we need the toolkit?

Yes. Access to additional resources is always a good thing. Across the three stages of the toolkit (prepare, engage and apply) there are tools and checklists with recommended tasks, that will support your approach and may highlight alternative options or ways of doing things.

The toolkit is not a process you must follow from start to finish. It’s designed to enhance and build on your existing processes and industry relationships. You can choose which tools you will use and tailor these to best meet what your organisation needs.

For example, the tools designed to set partnership foundations may be useful to revisit how partners will work together to support industry currency and gain tangible benefit from the partnership.

Will the toolkit help us partner with more than one employer, if that would support our TTAs?

Yes. Your organisation will choose and tailor tools to best suit your work environment and requirements.

For example, RTOs that specialise in a particular industry or sector might use the toolkit to focus on building a strong partnership with a single employer. RTOs that deliver training across multiple industries and sectors might use the toolkit to partner with multiple employers to make sure their TTAs can access relevant currency opportunities.

How will the toolkit help us work with employers to minimise health and safety risks?

Work health and safety risks for TTAs, employer staff and clients are an important consideration, particularly when TTAs are onsite. Tools in the prepare stage help you support employer partners to minimise these risks. These tools include:
‍
  • Use the currency selection tool to identify the industry currency opportunities that best meet TTAs needs. Discuss possible opportunities with employer partners to finalise opportunities based on what is feasible for employers and relevant for TTAs.
  • Use the employer information sheet to collate and share relevant information with employers before TTAs undertake industry currency opportunities.
  • Use the measurement plan to help employers supervise or confirm TTAs participation and completion of industry currency opportunities and engage in reflective discussion with TTAs, where relevant.
    ‍
The RTO, TTA and employer toolkits also include checklists with recommended tasks. These checklists clarify organisational and individual roles and responsibilities, and reflect tasks RTOs, TTAs and employers can reasonably complete.

How often should we use the tools and checklists? Do we need to use all of them?

Use the tools and checklists as often as you need.

The toolkit is not a process you must follow from start to finish. It’s designed to enhance and build on your existing processes and industry relationships. You can choose which tools you will use and tailor these to best meet what your organisation needs.

How will the toolkit help us support industry currency across different campuses and training packages?

The tools and checklists are designed to enhance and build on your existing processes and industry relationships. You can choose which tools you will use and tailor these to best meet what your organisation needs. This includes considerations, such as, size, number of campuses and the range of training packages you offer.

For example, RTOs with multiple campuses may need to collaborate with relevant stakeholders from each campus to make sure planned opportunities are fit for purpose.

How will RTOs partner with our organisation to enable industry currency?

The RTO toolkit includes tools and checklists to help RTOs complete key tasks to support industry currency.
These include:
  • Build strong partnerships with employers, including tangible value employers will receive
  • Identify and coordinate feasible opportunities for TTAs to update industry skills and knowledge
  • Share TTAs relevant employee information to support work, health and safety
  • Share a measurement approach to help employers confirm TTAs participation in industry currency opportunities and engage in reflective discussion with TTAs if relevant
Employers will share responsibility for some of these tasks, such as, identifying and coordinating industry currency opportunities.

The prepare stage includes tools for both employers and RTOs to build a shared understanding of partnership goals, roles and responsibilities, ways of working, and mutual benefit. This stage sets the foundation for the partnership and clarifies how each partner will support industry currency.

How will the toolkits help RTOs and TTAs enhance quality of teaching?

There are four ways the toolkit helps your RTO meet compliance requirements:
  • Strong partnerships with industry employers make it easier to access industry currency opportunities and gain insight into key industry changes from an employer perspective.
  • The currency activity schedule supports RTOs and employers to plan and coordinate industry currency opportunities for multiple TTAs over a 12‑month period.
  • The reflection and measurement plan helps RTOs tailor and standardise how TTAs record, reflect on and apply industry currency throughout the year, based on organisational requirements.
  • The RTO and TTA toolkits include guidance on when different industry currency opportunities are most effective to support decision-making.

Why is collaboration important to help TTAs maintain industry currency?

TTAs may find it difficult to build relationships with senior stakeholders and decision-makers within industry employers to access industry currency opportunities.

Organisation-level partnerships between employers and RTOs ensure the right stakeholders are involved and can support collaboration. These partnerships also help employers and RTOs work together to resolve organisational challenges.

For example, an employer and an RTO may implement a brief 30-minute induction for TTAs to mitigate work health and safety risks.

We already have a partnership with an employer, do we need the toolkit?

Every organisation is different. To choose the industry currency activities you can support, you should consider the services you deliver, staff availability, client expectations and service delivery protocols that protect staff and client safety. The employer toolkit will help you assess the likelihood and potential impact of different risks. This will help your organisation identify and coordinate industry currency opportunities that are within the level of risk your organisation is willing to accept.

For example, your organisation may be comfortable inviting TTAs to join your staff for an upcoming training session held onsite or virtually.

Will the toolkit help us manage service delivery protocols, that limit industry currency opportunities?

In many industries, such as child and health care, service delivery protocols, such as Child Safety Standards provide crucial and fundamental protection for staff and clients. TTAs can effectively update their industry skills and knowledge within the limitations placed by service delivery protocols.

There are lots of different industry currency opportunities that are meaningful for TTAs to participate in. This includes opportunities that TTAs can participate in virtually. The employer toolkit will help you identify cost-efficient and feasible industry currency opportunities TTAs can access based on your work environment.

We already partner with RTOs for student placements, do we need the toolkit?

Yes. There are important differences between what students need to achieve during a placement, in comparison to TTAs. It’s also important for TTAs to have opportunities to primarily focus on updating their industry skills and knowledge. Trying to do this while observing student placement can be less effective and meaningful for TTAs.

Additional resources is always a good thing.

We are located in a regional, rural or remote area, how can we support industry currency?

There are lots of different types of industry currency activities that can be meaningful for TTAs to participate in. Some activities can be effectively delivered through virtual meetings and workshops, such as attending an online Community of Practice. The employer toolkit will help you work out what types of industry currency activities your organisation could feasibly offer.

Will the toolkit help us partner with more than one RTO, if we want to?

Yes. You can choose and tailor the tools that best suit your organisations’ work environment and requirements. This includes using the tools to partner with more than one RTO to offer industry currency opportunities.

How often should we use the tools and checklists? Do we need to use all of them?

Use the tools and checklist as often as you need.

The toolkit is not a process you must follow from start to finish. It’s designed to enhance and build on your existing processes and industry relationships. You can choose which tools you will use and tailor these to best meet what your organisation needs.
